Investigation into the Assessment Tools Utilized by EFL Instructors in Online Environments

Abstract

To improve the quality of language teaching and learning, technology has been used for many years, especially during the time of COVID-19 pandemic. This necessitated a quick transition to online teaching and learning. Therefore, both EFL instructors and learners faced many difficulties in different areas. These difficulties were exemplified by technical, administrative and pedagogical aspects. One of the major difficulties faced by instructors was the assessment that EFL instructors used in their online classes. The current study aims at investigating how EFL instructors at Palestinian Universities dealt with the COVID-19 online assessment issues. The study also intends to explore the difficulties instructors faced while assessing their students. At the end of the study, the researchers propose alternative assessment tools that can be used by EFL instructors in any online teaching or learning environment. For data collection, the researchers employed a questionnaire and in-depth structured retrospective interviews. The results showed that assignments, exams, quizzes and presentations were the assessments most commonly used by the instructors. Moreover, poor internet connections and students’ cheating hindered valid, objective and reliable assessment of students’ skills abilities and performance.
