Abstract

Over the last decades, Arab countries have experienced significant emigration towards developed countries, the frequent emigration from Arab countries led to brain drain. Generally, skilled migration considers a controversial issue due to its impacts on economic and social issues in the origin countries. On the one hand, it depleted the Arab countries of their human capital, while on the other hand, it considers an expected outcome to the distortion in the Arab labor market. Remittances are the most positive impacts of skilled migration from Arab countries, however, the role of highly skilled migrants in the transfer of knowledge and best practices are still one of the disputed issues in the Arab countries. This paper reviews the magnitude of the skilled from Arab countries to developed countries, its drivers, and determinants and the way it effects on the development of the Arabic countries and the well-being of their people. The study concluded that despite some benefits of skilled migration such as remittances and decreases the unemployment rate among youth, the Arab countries are suffered as a result of brain drain. The losses are the highest in such vital sectors as education and health.
