The feature was developed from a winning idea presented during a hackathon organized by the Palestinian Medical Relief Society and UNFPA, and reflects how youth-led innovation can be translated into practical digital health solutions.

The idea responds to a critical need in Palestine: during emergencies, pregnant women may face delays in reaching clinics, hospitals or qualified healthcare providers. Movement restrictions, transportation challenges and sudden medical concerns can increase risks for both mothers and newborns. This feature uses technology to reduce that gap by connecting pregnant women with nearby available midwives in real time.

The feature works through an online map within the PalWell application. A pregnant woman in need of urgent support can use the app to identify the nearest available registered midwife. Similar to a ride-hailing model, but designed for maternal health, the woman sends a request through the application. Once a midwife accepts, the woman’s location becomes visible to her, allowing the midwife to reach the case and provide essential maternal health support as quickly as possible.

The midwives available through this feature include those registered with the Palestinian Medical Relief Society, as well as licensed midwives who wish to be present on the application. This creates a coordinated digital network of skilled providers who can support pregnant women during urgent situations, while also highlighting the essential role of midwives in protecting maternal and newborn health.

The feature does not replace hospitals, clinics or emergency systems. Instead, it strengthens them by helping pregnant women reach skilled care faster when every minute matters. It also supports better use of existing health resources by making qualified midwives more visible, accessible and connected to women who need immediate support.

This innovation is especially relevant in the current Palestinian context, where emergency preparedness and access to care are major public health priorities. It shows how digital health can move beyond information-sharing and become a practical tool for response, coordination and prevention. By improving timely access to midwifery care, the feature contributes to reducing preventable risks and supports efforts to protect women during pregnancy and childbirth.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Application View” color=”mulled-wine” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.paluniv.edu.ps%2Feng%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2026%2F05%2F0-5-1.pdf”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row full_height=”yes” equal_height=”yes” u_row_style=”0″ u_row_paralax=”0″ u_row_scheme=”0″][vc_column][vc_column_text] Mobile Midwife\\\\ a Midwife on the road E-health feature A new emergency maternal healthcare feature designed to help pregnant women access midwifery support quickly during urgent situations.
